3 Day Gorilla Tracking Rwanda

Day 1: Transfer from Kigali to Volcanoes NP

A representative of your lodge will pick you up from Kigali today and take you on a scenic drive to the Virunga Mountain range, home of the Mountain Gorilla. Rwanda is known as the land of a thousand hills, and on this drive you will soon see why. On the way to your lodge in Volcanoes National Park you will be passing over beautiful rolling green hills as far as your eye can see.

Should you need an overnight in Kigali on your arrival please let us know and we will add a night at a hotel in the capital at an additional cost.

Lodge Upgrade: Sabinyo Silverback Lodge

Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge is a luxury lodge offering wonderful views of the volcanoes and the surrounding countryside. Guest cottages and the main lodge building have been beautifully constructed – featuring large sitting areas, fireplaces, stylish en-suite bathrooms, a dressing room and a sheltered veranda. Let your Travel Consultant know at the time of booking if you want to upgrade to this lodge.

Day 2: Gorilla Tracking

Encountering the rare and endangered mountain gorillas is an experience of a lifetime.In the company of an experienced park ranger you will be tracking the whereabouts of one of the habituated family groups who live in the park and can tolerate the presence of humans for a brief period every day.Your gorilla tracking experience will be an exciting, yet challenging, journey along forested (sometimes muddy and slippery) slopes, tangled vines, thick vegetation and bamboo forests before you reach the territory of these gentle giants.

En-route, your ranger will point out telltale signs of previous gorilla activity like dung, nests and chewed bamboo shoots. Depending on the location of the gorillas on any given day the walk can take anything from 1 to 7 hours. Once the family of gorillas have been located, settle in to the environment and enjoy the hour you have to quietly observe these fascinating primates whose habits and mannerisms remind us so much of our own.Encountering the mountain gorillas in the wild is a truly humbling and emotional experience, one that you are sure to remember for the rest of your life.Accommodation at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge with Breakfast, Packed Lunch & Dinner

Day 3: Transfer back to Kigali

Enjoy your last morning in the rainforest today before a representative of the lodge drives you back to Kigali for your departure flight. Please make sure your international flight departure is after 3 pm. For flights departing before 3 pm we will arrange a night in Kigali for you at an additional cost.

Gorilla Tracking is the main highlight of a visit to this park, but you are also in the perfect place for volcano hikes, canoeing, nature walks, other primate tracking excursions and a visit to Dian Fossey’s tomb and research center.
